If the insurer says no, or says nothing

The route every insurer in India sits under, in order. The insurer, Bima Bharosa and the Ombudsman charge nothing to hear you.

  1. The insurer's grievance officer

Write to them first. The insurer must resolve your grievance within 14 days.

  2. IRDAI, through Bima Bharosa

If it is not resolved in 14 days, or the answer is unsatisfactory. Optional — the Ombudsman does not require it.

  3. The Insurance Ombudsman

Free, and its award binds the insurer. Open once the insurer rejects your grievance, answers unsatisfactorily, or stays silent for a month.

    Ombudsman offices
  4. The consumer commission

For a claim larger than an Ombudsman award can cover, or if its award does not satisfy you. Filing here first shuts the Ombudsman route.

Where these details come from

The Council for Insurance Ombudsmen publishes each insurer’s grievance officer. Every row here was checked against the insurer’s own grievance page on 13 July 2026, and where the two differed the insurer’s own page was taken. The insurers’ grievance-page links were last opened on 24 September 2026, and every link that failed that day has since been found on the insurer’s own site and checked before use.

BimaHaq is not an insurer and is not affiliated with any insurer listed here, with IRDAI or with the Council for Insurance Ombudsmen. These pages reproduce published grievance details so you can write to your insurer directly, free.

This guide is general information about the insurance-grievance process in India, not legal advice, and figures (timelines, monetary limits, jurisdiction) can change — verify against the official sources linked above before you rely on them.
