Before you write to ECGC
A grievance the insurer can act on without writing back to ask for something. The Ombudsman's complaint form asks for a copy of it, so write it for a stranger to read.
Put these in it
- Your policy number, and the claim number if there is one
- A copy of ECGC's rejection or settlement letter
- What you disagree with and why — quote the policy clause if you can
- What you want done: pay the claim, pay the balance, or look at it again
- Copies of the documents that support you — never the originals
- Your phone number and postal address
How to send it
Email is best: it is dated, and you keep a copy without trying. If you post it, use a service that records delivery. The one-month wait before the Ombudsman runs from the day ECGC receives your grievance, so you will want to be able to prove that day.

The route every insurer in India sits under, in order. The insurer, Bima Bharosa and the Ombudsman charge nothing to hear you.
Get the rejection in writing from the insurer
Immediately, before anything else
You cannot effectively challenge a rejection you can't see. Request the repudiation/denial letter with the specific clause and reason, plus copies of your policy wording and the claim file. This becomes the backbone of every later step.
Insurer's Grievance Redressal Officer (GRO)
Step 1 of the formal ladder
Every insurer has a Grievance Redressal Officer. Submit a dated written complaint (email works) attaching the rejection letter and your reasons. The insurer must acknowledge the grievance immediately and provide a resolution within 14 days, with reasons referenced to your policy's terms (IRDAI Master Circular on Protection of Policyholders' Interests, 2024). If it is not resolved within 30 days — or the decision is unacceptable — you can escalate.

If the insurer doesn't resolve it within 14 days, or the reply is unsatisfactory
Register the complaint on Bima Bharosa (bimabharosa.irdai.gov.in). IRDAI takes it up with the insurer and tracks resolution. This is a regulator-backed nudge, not an adjudication — but it often unlocks a stuck claim.

After the insurer rejects it, gives no reply for one month, or the reply is unsatisfactory
The Insurance Ombudsman (18 offices across India) adjudicates policyholder disputes free of charge — including complaints against insurers and their brokers/intermediaries. First raise a written grievance with the insurer; you can approach the Ombudsman once the insurer rejects it, fails to reply within one month, or the reply is unsatisfactory — within one year of that. You can file in writing or online at cioins.co.in. Awards are binding on the insurer. ₹50 lakh caps what it may award (Rule 17(3), Insurance Ombudsman Rules, 2017, as amended in 2023); that cap does not by itself bar a larger claim from being heard. Important: come here BEFORE any consumer forum or court case — under Rule 14(5), the Ombudsman cannot take up a matter that is pending before, or was already decided by, a court, consumer forum, or arbitrator.

As an alternative, or for any balance an Ombudsman award could not cover
Wrongful claim rejection is a 'deficiency in service'. You can file with the District/State/National Consumer Commission online at e-Jagriti (e-jagriti.gov.in) — the government portal that replaced e-Daakhil on 1 January 2025 — or resolve via mediation. Choose based on the amount, urgency, and evidence. Note: filing here permanently closes the Insurance Ombudsman route for the same dispute (Rule 14(5)) — if you want the free, binding Ombudsman award, use it first.
Open e-Jagriti
Go to the Ombudsman before a consumer court, not after
Under Rule 14(5) of the Insurance Ombudsman Rules, 2017, the Ombudsman cannot take up a complaint on the same subject matter that is pending before — or has already been decided by — any court, consumer forum, or arbitrator. Filing a consumer case first closes the Ombudsman route for that dispute permanently, so approach the Ombudsman before the Consumer Commission, never after.
ECGC writes export credit insurance. The rejection guides on this site are written for health, motor, life and personal-accident claims, so none is listed here — the grievance officer above is still the first step.
Common questions
What is the ECGC grievance email address?
ECGC's Grievance Redressal Officer is at ECGC-Grievance@ecgc.in, and the postal address is Grievance Department, ECGC Bhawan, CTS No. 393, 393/1 to 45, M.V. Road, Andheri East, Mumbai 400069. ECGC also takes grievances on its own grievance page, https://main.ecgc.in/english/customer-grievance/. These details come from the Council for Insurance Ombudsmen's list of insurers' grievance officers, checked against ECGC's own website on 13 July 2026.
How long does ECGC have to answer my grievance?
The insurer must acknowledge your grievance immediately and resolve it within 14 days, giving reasons that refer to your policy's terms (IRDAI Master Circular on Protection of Policyholders' Interests, 2024). If ECGC has not resolved it in that time, or you are not satisfied with the answer, you can escalate it to IRDAI through the Bima Bharosa portal.
Can I take a complaint about ECGC to the Insurance Ombudsman?
The Insurance Ombudsman covers personal lines of insurance (a policy taken in an individual capacity), group insurance policies, and policies issued to sole proprietorships and micro enterprises. A GROUP POLICY COUNTS EVEN WHEN A COMPANY HOLDS IT: if you are covered under your employer's group health or group life policy, you can approach the Ombudsman — yourself, or through your employer. What falls outside is a company's own commercial cover, such as property, marine or liability, unless the business is a sole proprietorship or a micro enterprise. A pure third-party motor claim goes to the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal instead. You must first put your grievance to the insurer or broker in writing. Only then can you approach the Ombudsman — and only if they rejected it, replied in a way you are not satisfied with, or did not reply within one month of receiving it.
Which Ombudsman office handles a complaint against ECGC?
There is no single office for an insurer — it depends on you. Under Rule 14(1) of the Insurance Ombudsman Rules, 2017 you may approach the office covering the place where the ECGC branch that dealt with your policy is located, or the office covering your own place of residence. The PIN-code finder on this site tells you which office covers an address.
How long do I have to go to the Ombudsman?
You then have one year — but the date it runs from depends on what the insurer did. If they rejected your representation, or replied in a way you were not satisfied with, the year runs from the date you RECEIVED that rejection or decision. If they never replied at all, it runs from one month after the date you SENT the representation — roughly thirteen months from sending. The Ombudsman can condone a late complaint, but that is discretionary, the insurer is heard first, and the complaint then counts as filed on the date the delay is condoned — so it is not something to rely on.
Is BimaHaq part of ECGC?
No. BimaHaq is an independent private platform, not affiliated with ECGC, IRDAI or the Council for Insurance Ombudsmen. This page reproduces ECGC's published grievance details so you can write to it yourself, free. BimaHaq separately offers paid help preparing a grievance; you never need it to file one.
