Short answer: pick the office covering the state/city of the insurer branch that handled your policy (or your address, per current rules), file free within about a year of the insurer's final reply, and confirm the exact territorial split and contact details on the official Council for Insurance Ombudsmen site.

Find the office that covers you

Enter your PIN code — it is the most reliable signal, because it identifies your postal district, and that is how the Ombudsman jurisdictions are drawn. District names on their own repeat across states: Raigad in Maharashtra and Raigarh in Chhattisgarh belong to different offices. City and state are optional and help narrow it further.

Territorial splits (e.g. Delhi vs Chandigarh for parts of the NCR/Haryana, Mumbai vs Pune vs Thane) can change, and districts are sometimes redrawn. These details are reproduced from the Council for Insurance Ombudsmen's official address list — re-check them there before you post. The Ombudsman itself never charges to accept a complaint.

FAQs

Common questions

How many Insurance Ombudsman offices are there in India?

There are 18 Insurance Ombudsman centres in India — Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Noida, Patna, Pune, and Thane — each covering specific states and union territories.

Which Insurance Ombudsman office should I file with?

File with the office that covers the location of the insurer's branch that issued or serviced your policy, or your own address, depending on the current rules. Enter your PIN code in the finder below, or read the areas covered on each office card, and confirm the exact territorial jurisdiction at cioins.co.in.

What is the address, phone number and email of my Insurance Ombudsman office?

Every office's full postal address, phone number and email is on its card below — that is what you use to post or email a complaint. Ombudsman offices use @cioins.co.in email addresses (for example oio.mumbai@cioins.co.in). The Ombudsman charges nothing to register or hear your complaint, and nobody is entitled to a fee for lodging it on your behalf — treat any such demand as a warning sign. BimaHaq's own services are separate and optional, and their price is always shown before you pay.

Two offices both look like they cover my district — which do I use?

Do not guess. Several states are split between offices by district or by municipal ward — Maharashtra between Mumbai, Pune and Thane; Uttar Pradesh between Lucknow and Noida; Haryana between Delhi and Chandigarh — and district names repeat across states, so Raigad in Maharashtra and Raigarh in Chhattisgarh fall under different offices. When the finder cannot separate them it shows you every office it could be, and you pick the one whose areas covered name your district or ward. Filing with the wrong office costs weeks, and the one-year limitation window does not pause while you wait.

Does the Insurance Ombudsman charge a fee?

No. Filing a complaint with the Insurance Ombudsman is free, and the Ombudsman's award is binding on the insurer. You generally approach it within one year of the insurer's final reply, after first complaining to the insurer's grievance officer.
